John Spence learned ikebana the traditional way at age 8. His mother taught him. A career building anything from computer models to house remodeling to process engineering led to the realization ikebana could also be viewed as building an arrangement. Kado, the Art of Flowers became an integral part of his life. He is an instructor in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana and currently applies the aesthetics learned from Ikebana to building a Japanese garden at his house.

Lucy Spence grew up around artists which influenced her pursuit of ikebana and painting as artistic practices. Along with art, she enjoyed a career in education as a professor at USC Columbia. Her position led to an opportunity to work in Osaka, Japan as a visiting scholar, where she furthered her interest in Japanese language and culture. Residing in Columbia, South Carolina, she is an instructor in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.
