John Spence
Eiryu 栄流
Sogetsu, Second Grade, Nikyu Shihan - Sanyo Instructor
John Spence learned ikebana the traditional way at age 8. His mother taught him. A career building anything from computer models to house remodeling to process engineering led to the realization ikebana could also be viewed as building an arrangement. Kado, the Art of Flowers became an integral part of his life. He is an instructor in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana and currently applies the aesthetics learned from Ikebana to building a Japanese garden at his house.

Lucy Spence
Seiri 清里
Sogetsu, Third Grade, Sankyu Shihan - Instructor
Lucy Spence grew up with art. Her mother was an artist. Despite an inherent love of art, she pursued a career in education culminating as a professor at USC Columbia. Her PhD led to an opportunity to work in Japan as a visiting scholar and to hunt through Kyoto flea markets for ikebana containers. She still pursues a love of art and learning as an instructor in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, study of Japanese language and culture and a continuous series of art classes ranging from wonderfully life changing to annoying tedious.
